WiGROd is the wireless version of the well known IGROd system for the environmental remote sensing of temperature and humidity,
designed and produced by Area SX.
By mean of the nodes, gateways WiGROd and a complete software package pre-installed on a virtual PC you can monitor temperature and
humidity in a very easy and quick way.
In this article we introduce the wireless version of the system for remote control of temperature and humidity called IGROd SYSTEM by Area SX,
which is improved by the ZigBee wireless probe (Xbee series 1) named WiGROd Node (Wireless Zigbee thermoigrometric sensor )
and the LAN <-> WiGROd gateway named WiGROd Gateway (Ethernet to Zigbee Gateway).
The software is completely rewritten and it is fully compliant with the wired nodes uIGROD (Thermohygrometric Ethernet sensor (boxed version)) and
the units for sending alarms via SMS which are SMS Machine HTTP (SMS Machine HTTP/EMAIL) and SMS Line Control (SMS Line Control EVO with optional Backup Battery).
The latter can also be configured as a wired node to measure temperature and humidity.
The software kit is provided pre-installed on Linux operating system running on virtual machine (VMWare).
On the virtual machine there are the software daemon that queries the nodes and also the database and the Web interface.
All the configuration settings and the measurements executed by the nodes are stored in the database,
whilst the WEB interface allows you managing and monitoring the IGROd system simply using the browser from any PC connected on LAN/Internet
to the server where the virtual machine runs
The following picture displays schematically the logical approach of the IGROd system with WiGROd and uIGROd nodes.
As previously mentioned, the IGROd system is able to interface with external devices to send SMS alarm messages such as
SMS Machine HTTP (SMS Machine HTTP Wap Push: a new power for SMSs) or SMS LineControl.
If the SMS sending unit is installed and configured, then the system will send alarm messages via SMS and / or E-Mail
when the set thresholds of temperature and humidity, maximum and / or minimum, are overcome.
Installation of the WiGROd nodes
For their correct operation, the WiGROd nodes need a WiGROd Gateway node which must be placed at a distance not exceeding 30m (indoor),
this value can be smaller if any electromagnetic noise or disturb generated by Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices is present.
The WiGROD gateways (Max 5 for IGROd system) should be placed, preferably, in the place you want to monitor or in the nearby area,
and connected to the LAN (Ethernet 10/100T) using a patch cable CAT 5 (maximum length 80m).
The WiGROD nodes and gateways are powered by an 220V AC / 5V DC - 500mA adapter with the following polarity of the connector:
The only needed configuration for the correct operation of the WiGROd nodes must be performed on the gateway to set the IP address
suitable for the network where it is connected.
The setup of the WiGROd gateway is executed by the ezTCP Manager utility software
running on a PC connected on the same LAN.
Installing the IGROd SYSTEM software on VMWare
To simplify and reduce setup costs, Area SX provides the SYSTEM IGROd software package fully installed on Linux OS for VMWare virtual machine.
The use of a virtualized system or virtual machine
has many advantages including security, robustness and portability from one operating system / PC to another.
In fact, to run a virtual machine you have just to install a special player (available for Windows, Linux and Mac) and launch a file, just
as if you want to play a video file.
To run the virtual machine of IGROd SYSTEM you must download and install on a PC with Ethernet interface and at least 1Gb of RAM
(the virtual machine requires its own 300Mb of RAM), the package VMware Player.
The player is available in free download and suitable for all OS at the following link:
http://www.vmware.com/download/player/
Once completed the download and installation process on your system, you need to extract the package VMWARE_IGROD_SYSTEMS.zip
(provided for free with the IGROd_PACK uIGROd-PACK - Kit per il monitoraggio di temperatura ed umidità su rete LAN),
then double click on the file IGROd_SYSTEMS.vmx and wait for the window on the desktop which will show the start of the Linux system
where the installation of the IGROd software is hosted.
Once executed the previuos operation, then we have a Linux OS (Ubuntu Mini) running on our host PC as it were a normal application.
The Linux installation has the default IP address: 192.168.0.130 and login credentials are:
user: igrod password: igrod
root password: igrod.
Besides the access via the VMware console, you can manage the Linux installation remotely using an SSH encrypted connection.
IGROd SYSTEM Web Interface
The web interface for IGROd system management can be reached on the net with any web browser simply by typing the web address:
http://[ip address of the vmware]/
and access with the default credentials (username: admin and password: admin).
Via web interface, you can search for the wireless Wigrod nodes connected to a gateway node and configure them
to make temperature and humidity measurements and to set the alarm thresholds.
Also on the web interface you can display in a table or a chart all the values measured by each single node.
